SCISWeb

Department of Education and Training schools in Western Australia are able to download catalogue records for library resources from Curriculum Corporation's SCISWeb service. The three year licence between the Department and the Corporation has been renewed to 2011 and user numbers and passwords will be the same each year. If there are likely to be any staff changes in your school library, please ensure that your user number and password are recorded for the information of the new staff. Contact Bev Blackwell on 9229 5421 if you have any queries about the SCISWeb service.

Awaiting cataloguing

Items received from schools for cataloguing are logged so that schools know the items have arrived and so that other schools know what is in process. These items can be searched by ISBN (or title if no ISBN), week number, or school code.

The Awaiting cataloguing page also includes the Turnaround time. This shows you what week the cataloguers are working on so that you can gauge when the record will be available on SCISWeb.

Taped off-air television programs catalogue records

Catalogue records are available for television programs. To provide you with faster access to records for television programs, CMIS is publishing SCIS numbers for the most recently catalogued programs. Schools in eastern Australia should recognise that the time difference between EDT and WST means that records may not be available until late on the day following the program going to air. A separate record is made for each program with its own title. Schools choosing to record several programs on one cassette will need to annotate their catalogue records to reflect this.

You can search SCISWeb to see if the record is already available for older programs. Many broadcast programs also become available commercially. The record for the commercial tape will be virtually identical to that for the taped-off-air broadcast. Any minor difference can easily be amended to reflect your copy. You should note that it is illegal to copy a commercially produced video, even if your school has bought it. However a television broadcast may be taped and copied even if the program is also available commercially. Please note that recent changes have been made to the existing Copyright Act

For programs not catalogued, WA schools may send them in to the Cataloguing section to be catalogued. The videocassettes must carry required copyright details. Information on school video copying rights are available in Appendix F of the Our policies section on the Department's website under the title Summary: Copyright for schools. A label showing the SCIS number for the catalogue record will be placed inside the plastic container, as the removable labels tend to fall off the non-stick plastic covering.

Website catalogue records

Catalogue records are available for websites that have been catalogued on SCISWeb. The sites have been evaluated to ensure that their content is suitable for schools. To order records you will need to obtain SCIS numbers from the SCIS OPAC as sites rarely have ISBNs.

Detailed instructions for finding these numbers can be obtained by clicking here.

Resources in languages other than English

Library resources in languages other than English (LOTE) are catalogued in the same way as resources in English, e.g. an Italian book on cooking would have the subject heading "Cookery" and the Dewey Number 641.5 A second subject heading is always added for the language, e.g. Italian language text. A catalogue record is created using information in the form found on the item, except that all accent marks or diacritics are ignored, e.g. the German letter "ß" is written as "ss".

Non-Roman script

For languages in a non-Roman script, the script is transliterated to the Roman alphabet, so that it can be read and integrated into the normal catalogue. For Chinese language materials, Pinyin is used. For Japanese material, Romanji is used. The school may be asked to provide the transliteration if we do not have the expertise in Central Office.

If the item has an ISBN or ISSN, use this to order a catalogue record from SCISWeb. However, items without an ISBN or ISSN can be difficult to find. Check the images of the front covers to see if it has been catalogued and use the SCIS number for ordering the record. NB We recommend that schools write the romanised title on the item, so that it can be more easily identified.
