Managing Student Safety Online

The Internet is a rich educational resource that dramatically expands classroom resources.

The access to curriculum materials, group projects, collaboration and idea sharing encourages independence and problem solving skills expected of students in today’s society.

With a well-planned approach teachers can use the Internet to achieve positive teaching and learning outcomes enabling students to become information literate members of society who can make decisions based on sound knowledge and understanding.

However there are concerns regarding the dangers and pitfalls that students may unwittingly encounter online.

Educational systems and individual schools must recognise their duty of care and the need to support students in the appropriate and safe use of the Internet.

By alerting parents and students to potential dangers, developing guidelines and providing advice and support, the exposure of students to inappropriate material and communication can be minimised.
