This information is provided by CMIS for library
staff in all primary and secondary schools in Western Australia.
It is updated annually and can be used in a number of ways.
Below are some suggestions:
The average price information can be particularly
useful when preparing budget submissions for the Library Resource
Centre or for resource allocation for the whole school. It
provides teachers and administrators with a guide to the cost
of resources and provides information necessary for more accurate
forward planning. Teachers and Library Officers can also use
the average price information to compare cost structures from
year to year. This information is useful for making decisions
on the type and number of resources to be purchased in any
given year and will assist in the selection of resources and
development of the library collection.
For example:
- In recent years the cost of software and
CD-ROM resources has gradually decreased, so schools may
now consider the purchase of extra software to be a viable
option.
- Since the price of hardback print materials
has increased it may be more cost effective for schools
to consider paperback editions for purchase. Hardback editions
may also be published in paperback at a later date and schools
can choose to wait for this edition.
When estimating
insurance cover the average price information can be used to
estimate the value of the Library collection and other school
resources held in classrooms and storerooms. To arrive at a
reasonably accurate figure for insurance purposes, schools should
know the number and type of resources held. In
the case of damage or loss of library or school resources, for
example in the case of a fire; the school can use previously
calculated resource numbers and types, plus the current average
price information to estimate the replacement value of items
lost.
Due to the overall increasing cost of
all types of resources (not just library), pressure from other
initiatives targeted by the School Development Committee, greater
curriculum options and the fact that schools are being asked
to fund a wider range of activities; schools often need to look
to other avenues for extra funding for resources. Other avenues
of funding might include:
- Approaching your P & C.
- Individual sponsors.
- Corporate or local business sponsors.
- Local Government support.
- Federal funding initiatives/special grants.
- Other fundraising activities.
The average price information can be used
here to provide accurate and reliable forecasts for the projected
expenditure of the funds raised. Submissions are more likely
to be favourably received if accurate expenditure figures are
provided and a finite fundraising goal is visible.
